Syosset: Calacatta Marble Surround, Shiplap Accent Wall, and Inset Hearth

This Syosset project was part of a larger open floor plan renovation. The design centered on a Calacatta marble surround with a stepped mantel profile set against a 6-foot shiplap accent wall running floor to ceiling. Instead of laying the marble hearth on top of the white oak flooring — the standard approach — the hearth was cut and inset directly into the floor for a seamless flush transition with no threshold, no height change, and no visible seam. The shiplap wall was spray-finished on site using HVLP equipment in a custom Sherwin-Williams cabinet color that reads almost black against the white marble.

Garden City: Majestic Gas Insert, Bardiglio Marble, and Full-Room Wainscoting

This Garden City den was part of a larger millwork scope. The firebox is a Majestic 36-inch gas insert coordinated through a licensed plumbing trade partner under Kevin’s direct supervision. Mantel height was set at 54 inches specifically to accommodate a TV above while maintaining proper visual proportion. The surround and raised hearth use Bardiglio marble — a soft grey Italian marble with a quieter vein pattern than Calacatta. All poplar components were milled to be dimensionally symmetrical. The panel-and-rail wainscoting wraps the entire room, centering the fireplace wall as the dominant architectural feature.

Merrick: Waterfront Home, Reclaimed-Look White Oak Mantel, and Flanking Cabinet Units

This Merrick waterfront project called for coastal warmth with natural wood character balanced by clean painted millwork. Aged white oak square stock was sourced from a Brooklyn hardwood mill — heavily knotted, with worm holes and natural color variation — then milled and jointed on site into a solid mantel that reads like a period reclaimed beam. The fabrication happened directly in the room using a full mill setup with thickness planer, jointer, and drum sander. The finished mantel carries real knots and grain variation at roughly a third of the cost of true reclaimed lumber. Cabinetry and adjustable shelving run on both sides of the fireplace for storage and display.

Woodbury: Solving an Off-Center Fireplace with a Custom Cabinet Unit

This Woodbury project addressed a problem common to older homes: the original fireplace sat noticeably off-center in the room. The solution was a single fitted cabinet unit on the left side of the fireplace wall — a 36-inch base cabinet with Shaker panel doors designed to match the adjoining kitchen cabinetry, topped with open display shelving extending to 54 inches. Integrated shelf lighting used wiring hidden through dados so no exposed wiring remained visible. The cabinet mass on the left optically centers the hearth wall without touching the original firebox position. Carrara marble mosaic tile surround with a raised blue slate hearth sourced locally.

Farmingdale: Stacked Stone Surround with Traditional Millwork Mantel

This Farmingdale project combined rustic stone texture with traditional painted millwork. The surround uses stacked ledger stone, a non-combustible material that rewards careful coursing and tight joints at the firebox opening. The mantel uses a stepped cornice profile with recessed frieze detailing and pilaster-style legs fabricated from a furniture-grade plywood carcass with poplar face frames and molding profiles. The hearth is 2-inch bluestone flat-ground to a clean edge. The contrast between the rough stone texture and crisp white millwork gives the fireplace wall its visual balance.
